Indonesian Woman Sentenced for Leading Baby Trafficking Ring

Lie Siu Luan, the ringleader of a baby trafficking operation in Indonesia, was sentenced to seven years in prison on Tuesday by Judge Gatot Ardian Agustriono. She was found guilty of committing crimes aimed at exploiting children for adoption, specifically trafficking at least 12 babies to Singapore.

The prosecution had requested a 10-year sentence. Lie reportedly earned around $17,000 from these illegal activities.

Another individual, Astri Fitri Nika, was also found guilty of similar charges and received a six-year and seven-month prison sentence. The trafficking operation was uncovered after parents reported their babies missing, leading to police intervention in West Java Province, where several infants were rescued from the syndicate.

The issue of human trafficking remains a significant problem in Indonesia, which consists of 17,000 islands, with alarming cases reported, including at least 57 individuals found in cages at a palm oil plantation in North Sumatra Province in 2022.
