Iraq Secures Understandings to Bypass Hormuz Blockade

Iraq's oil ministry announced on Tuesday that it has reached "understandings" with the United States and Iran to circumvent the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which is critical for Iraqi oil exports. Saheb Bazoun, a spokesperson for the Iraqi oil ministry, did not specify when these understandings would be implemented but indicated that they are part of efforts to mitigate the impact of the blockade on Iraqi oil exports.

Earlier this month, Iran announced a fragile ceasefire, allowing Iraqi ships to transit the waterway. Iraq, a member of the OPEC oil cartel, is seeking to maintain normal export levels, particularly as oil exports account for 90 percent of its budget revenue, which has plummeted by 70 percent since March compared to February.

Iraq continues to utilize secondary export routes, including pipelines to Turkey's Ceyhan port and oil exports via Syria, resuming at 250,000 barrels per day. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has severely affected energy markets, particularly with Iran tightening its control over the Strait of Hormuz.
