ISWAP Commander Killed by Own IED, Sparks Internal Discord

On February 24, a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) was reportedly killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) that he had planted himself in Borno State, according to security sources. This incident has sparked significant internal discord within ISWAP, as tensions rise among fighters in the Lake Chad Basin area.

The commander, identified as Amir Musa, confronted members of the unit intelligence to seek clarification regarding the death of two fighters, Abu Nazir and Abu Kasim. The IED detonated along an operational route amid clashes with rival Boko Haram elements.

Further reports indicate that Abu Nazir allegedly killed a fellow ISWAP member during an encounter with Boko Haram fighters, believed to be responsible for Abu Kasim's earlier death. This sequence of events highlights a breakdown in coordination within ISWAP and underscores the ongoing rivalry with Boko Haram, which continues to weaken the operational cohesion of the faction as Nigerian security forces maintain their offensive against terrorist enclaves in the northeast.
