Kaduna Activist Condemns Cleric's 'Infidels' Comment

Mahdi Shehu, a Kaduna-based social activist and whistleblower, criticized Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Jingir for his recent comments referring to Christians as "infidels." Shehu described Jingir's remarks as reckless and inconsistent with Islamic teachings, specifically citing the Quran's designation of Christians as Ahl al-Kitab, or "People of the Book." He referenced various verses from the Quran, including Sura Al-Ma’ida 5:19, 5:59, and 5:68, to support his argument. Shehu warned that Jingir's statements could undermine efforts for peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims in Northern Nigeria, where peace is already fragile.

He urged Christians not to generalize Jingir's views to the broader Muslim community, emphasizing that his comments do not represent the beliefs of many peace-loving Muslims. Additionally, Shehu accused Jingir of making such controversial statements to gain attention and political patronage, criticizing him for disregarding his age and status as a religious leader.
