Ogun Youth Leaders Demand Ministry for Youth Development

In commemoration of the 2026 International Youth Day, youth leaders in Ogun State convened at the Nigerian Youth Parliament's 1st Stakeholders Townhall Meeting and Ogun Youth Dialogue at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta. Olukoyejo Morenikeji, representing Ogun West Senatorial District at the 6th Assembly of NYP, advocated for the creation of a standalone Ministry of Youth Development to enhance youth-focused programs and policies, especially as the state approaches a political transition.

He noted that the previous structure, which existed before 2023, was merged with the sports ministry, and urged for a revival of the dedicated youth ministry. Morenikeji also called for a review of appointments related to youth matters to ensure alignment with the youth age bracket of 18 to 35 years.

Additionally, he urged the government to expedite the finalization of the Ogun State Youth Policy 2026-2030, which has been vetted by the Ministry of Justice. Iyanuoluwa Sonde-Ikokoh, representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, emphasized the importance of youth participation in decision-making processes.
