Joint Task Force rescues 21 civilians in Zamfara, Katsina operations

During mid-August 2026, the Joint Task Force North West executed rescue missions in both Zamfara and Katsina states, liberating no fewer than 21 individuals from kidnappers affiliated with terrorist organizations. These operations unfolded under Operation Fansan Yamma on August 17 and 18, with details disclosed by Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the task force's Media Information Officer.

In Zamfara, military units intervened following kidnapping reports near the Gurusu–Anka Road and within Tsafe Local Government Area. After pursuing the armed abductors, personnel successfully freed seven captives—including three children and four women.

Simultaneously, an improvised explosive device positioned along a major thoroughfare was discovered and neutralized by the troops, eliminating a threat to civilian travelers. Meanwhile, operations in neighboring Katsina State resulted in the liberation of 14 additional victims—eight female and six male.

Intelligence regarding terrorist activities and captive movements in the Madaci Forest vicinity, situated in Sabuwa Local Government Area, prompted the military deployment. Upon arriving at the target zone, troops made direct contact with the armed faction holding hostages.

These successes demonstrate ongoing security initiatives across Nigeria's north-western region, where kidnapping has remained a persistent challenge. The Joint Task Force North West orchestrates coordinated military action throughout the multi-state area.

Among those freed in both operations, no fatalities occurred. Military statements have remained silent regarding potential losses sustained by the terrorist groups involved.
