FG Launches Three-Year Learning Assessment for Education

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a three-year learning assessment plan aimed at addressing the ongoing education crisis in the country. Dr.
Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, disclosed this initiative on Friday in Abuja. The National Learning Assessment (NLA) will be conducted in 2026 and will include both public and private schools within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The assessment targets pupils in primary three, primary five, junior secondary school (JSS) two, and senior secondary school (SSS) two. It is designed to measure literacy, numeracy, and cognitive abilities across different educational levels.
Alausa stated that this assessment will become a regular exercise every three years and will be included in the budget of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) starting in 2029. He emphasized the importance of accurate data to guide policy decisions and improve learning outcomes, noting that previous assessments revealed that 42 million Nigerian children are struggling with learning.
The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu's education reform agenda.
