SSANU Secures Release of Salary Arrears from FG

The federal government has released eight months’ salary arrears owed to members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) after the union issued a 14-day ultimatum threatening an indefinite strike over the implementation of the 2026 FGN/SSANU agreement. SSANU president, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, confirmed the payment on Wednesday and commended the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, for his intervention, which averted potential disruptions in universities.
The ultimatum was issued following SSANU's 56th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, demanding the release of funds and settlement of outstanding Consolidated University Non-Academic Salary Structure (CONTISS) arrears from January 1, 2026. While welcoming the payment, SSANU noted that it did not resolve all outstanding obligations, including two months’ withheld salaries and one-year arrears from salary increases.
The union urged state governments and university councils to ensure full implementation of the agreement to avoid further unrest.
