Kwankwaso, Shekarau, Ganduje Shape Kano's Political Future

Kano State plays a crucial role in Nigeria's political dynamics, characterized by unpredictable shifts in alliances and loyalties. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso served as governor from 1999 to 2003, followed by Ibrahim Shekarau, who held the position until 2007.

Kwankwaso returned to power in 2011, handing over to his deputy, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in 2015. However, their alliance deteriorated, leading to a split where Kwankwaso formed the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and contested the 2023 presidential election.

He emerged as a significant political figure by defeating Ganduje’s candidate for the Kano governorship. Recently, Kwankwaso's political influence waned as his godson, Governor Abba Yusuf, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso has since left the NNPP and joined Peter Obi in the National Democratic Congress as its vice-presidential candidate. Despite these changes, Kwankwaso, Shekarau, and Ganduje maintain substantial political influence in Kano.
