Kano State Bans IV Fluids and Blood Transfusions at Stores

The Kano State Government has implemented a ban on the administration of intravenous (IV) fluid infusion and blood transfusion at patent medicine stores throughout the state. This directive was announced by Khadijah Hussein-Sa’id, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private Health Institutions Management Agency (PHIMA), during a sensitisation workshop for private health facility proprietors and medical directors.

Hussein-Sa’id emphasized that patent medicine stores are classified as non-clinical retail outlets and are not authorized to perform invasive medical procedures. The ban aims to protect residents from unsafe and illegal medical practices while strengthening the regulation of private health facilities.

She warned that any non-compliant patent medicine store would face immediate closure and sanctions. Blood transfusions and IV fluid therapies must only be administered in accredited health facilities under qualified medical supervision.

Hussein-Sa’id encouraged the public to report unauthorized practices and stated that PHIMA would take decisive action against unsafe medical practices.
