Kano Court Halts Smart Meter Bidding Process

On Wednesday, a Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice M. N.

Yunusa, ordered a halt to the smart meter bidding process involving electricity distribution companies. This decision follows an ex parte application filed by the Trustee Association of Meter Manufacturers Nigeria on behalf of its members.

The court directed all parties to maintain the status quo pending the hearing of a substantive motion scheduled for May 26, 2026. The suit, marked FHC/KAN/CS/214/2026, involves several entities, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Power.

The Trustee Association argued that the ongoing procurement process, which began with advertisements in January 2026 and was set to close on April 30, 2026, undermines the interests of local meter manufacturers and raises concerns about due process. This legal action is part of ongoing efforts by the federal government to address Nigeria's meter gap and improve the efficiency of electricity billing.
