Kano State to Restore Water Supply by December 2023

The Kano State government, represented by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, has assured residents that water supply will be restored by December 2023 after a decade of disruption. During an inspection of the Challawa facility and Goron Dutse reservoirs, Hashim stated that the Challawa plant, which has a capacity of 220 million liters, was operating at less than 30 percent of its capacity due to vandalism and neglect.

Rehabilitation works are nearly complete, including the restoration of filtration units and the replacement of asbestos pipes with steel pipes, with a test run expected by mid-September. Hashim emphasized that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration is committed to addressing the water demand gap in Kano, currently over 300 million liters daily.

Engineer Garba Ahmed Bichi, Managing Director of the Kano State Water Board, noted that the Goron Dutse reservoirs had not received water for over ten years but are now expected to begin receiving water by the end of September 2023.
