Kano's Water Demand Exceeds Supply by 300 Million Liters

Kano State requires over 750 million liters of water daily, as stated by Commissioner Hashim during a press briefing. The demand is based on figures from 2022 and significantly surpasses the supply capacity of the state’s treatment plants, which can produce only 445 million liters at full capacity.

This results in a daily shortfall of over 300 million liters. Hashim noted that upon taking office, many plants operated below 20 percent capacity, with the Tamburawa plant producing no water.

The government is actively rehabilitating treatment plants, reservoirs, and pipelines, with Challawa expected to supply 51 percent of the state's water once operational. Additionally, nine of the 19 regional water schemes are undergoing restoration.

Hashim assured residents of efforts to bridge the water deficit and improve infrastructure to accommodate future population growth. He also mentioned ongoing flood control measures and afforestation projects, with Kano's climate governance ranking improving from 35th to 4th nationally.
