Kano Mass Wedding Program Welcomes Muslims and Christians

The Kano Hisbah Board, led by Deputy Commandant Aminuddeen, has declared that its mass wedding program is inclusive of both Muslims and Christians. This initiative aims to promote stable family life and reduce social vices in the state.

The program, known as Auren Gata, is designed to assist widows, divorcees, spinsters, and bachelors. The last mass wedding took place in October 2023, with three Christian couples participating.

The program is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration's efforts to support orphans and disadvantaged families who struggle to finance marriages. Sheikh Muhammad Lawan Yakub described the program as a positive intervention to strengthen families and improve social stability.

Concerns were raised about couples joining primarily for government assistance rather than genuine commitment. The initiative also aims to address poverty and unemployment, which are significant contributors to divorce in Northern Nigeria.

The Hisbah Board plans to provide counseling and guidance post-marriage to ensure successful unions.
