Kano's Literacy Reform Gains Global Recognition in London

Kano State's literacy reform has received international acclaim at the International Parliamentary Forum on Reading Revolution, held at the House of Lords in Westminster, London. The forum, supported by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Nigeria and Universal Learning Solutions, recognized Kano's literacy program as a sustainable model for educational reform in Africa.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, noted that the state funds its literacy initiatives independently, which was commended as a viable alternative to donor reliance. Dr Haladu Mohammed, the Technical Adviser on Education Reform, represented the governor and emphasized that education is the administration's top priority, with significant budget allocation for the sector.

The implementation of the Jolly Phonics program has reportedly improved children's reading abilities, making Kano the first Nigerian state to adopt the UK's Phonics Screening Check. The program is also being extended to Qur’anic schools, aiming to enhance foundational literacy skills while preserving religious heritage.
