Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Wins International Literacy Award

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has been awarded the International Literacy and Learning Leadership Award for his commitment to enhancing education in the state. The award was presented by Universal Learning Solutions (ULS) during a ceremony at Stationers’ Hall in London, UK, marking the 20th anniversary of Jolly Phonics in Africa.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, accepted the award on behalf of Governor Yusuf, who allocated 30% of Kano State’s budget to education, one of the highest allocations in Nigeria. The award recognizes the administration's efforts to improve learning outcomes, expand access to quality education, and ensure more children can attend school.

The Emir emphasized education as a vital tool for social transformation and urged collaboration among governments, communities, and development partners to ensure every child's right to literacy. Gary Foxcroft, Co-founder and CEO of ULS, commended Governor Yusuf's educational investments and reaffirmed the partnership with Kano State to enhance the Jolly Phonics program and improve literacy outcomes.
