Kano's Education Reforms Earn UK Parliament Endorsement

Kano State's education reforms, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, have garnered significant international recognition after being presented at the UK Parliament as a model for literacy transformation in Africa. This endorsement occurred during the International Parliamentary Forum on Reading Revolution at the House of Lords, Westminster, London.

The event, chaired by Lord Alton of Liverpool and supported by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Nigeria, highlighted the state's commitment to foundational learning through public investment and evidence-based policies. Dr.

Haladu Mohammed, the Technical Adviser on Education Reform, represented Governor Yusuf and emphasized that education is the administration's top priority. He noted that Kano is the first state in Nigeria to implement the UK's Phonics Screening Check, which objectively measures children's reading progress.

The reforms are primarily financed by the state, distinguishing them from many other literacy programs in Africa that rely on donor support. The partnership with Universal Learning Solutions to implement the Jolly Phonics program has already shown measurable improvements in children's reading abilities.
