Kano Senator Rufai Hanga Resigns from NDC

Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, representing the Kano Central Senatorial District and serving as the Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate, announced his resignation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a letter dated August 3, 2026. He addressed the letter to the Nasarawa Local Government Chairman of the NDC, stating that he was leaving the party to focus on personal activities that had been negatively impacted by his political commitments.

Hanga did not disclose which political party he plans to join. His resignation follows speculation regarding his dissatisfaction with the NDC, particularly concerning perceived betrayals related to his loyalty to Dr.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement. Reports indicate that senior members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including National Chairman Dr.

Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, have met with Hanga to persuade him to join their party. Following a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Hanga expressed confidence in Tinubu's presidential election prospects but stated that the President's party would struggle in Kano State.

Hanga's resignation is expected to influence the political dynamics in Kano as the 2027 general elections approach.
