Kano State Tops ECOWAS Education Spending Rankings

Kano State has emerged as the highest-ranking sub-national government in education spending within the ECOWAS region, according to a report released by Univers Paris. The ranking places Kano first among 209 sub-national governments across 15 ECOWAS member states, with an overall score of 87.21.

The assessment measures government commitment to education based on actual expenditure per student, budget execution, educational priorities, and transparency. Kano's strong performance is attributed to its efficient budget execution and significant educational expenditure.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has allocated 29.5% of the state’s 2024 budget and 30% of the 2025 budget to education, reflecting a commitment to improving educational access and infrastructure. The report emphasizes Kano's sustained investment in education, aiming to address infrastructure decay and enhance learning conditions.

The ranking is seen as a recognition of the state government's efforts to reform and strengthen the educational sector.
