Katsina Borders with Niger Republic Remain Closed

The borders between Nigeria and the Niger Republic in the Kongolam and Babban Mutun areas of Katsina State have remained closed since August 2019, following a decision by former President Muhammadu Buhari's administration to curb smuggling and enhance domestic production. Despite claims from the federal government that all land borders were reopened on March 14, 2024, residents assert that the Kongolam and Babban Mutun borders are still closed for commercial activities.

Malam Muhammad, a resident, reported that only immigration allows passage, while Customs has not permitted commercial trade, leading to business closures. Additionally, residents face extortion at approximately 26 checkpoints along the Daura-Kongolam road, manned by police, immigration, and customs officials.

Malam Anwar Lawali, Chairman of the Kongolam Border Community Forum, noted that the border closure has deterred traders from the Niger Republic, adversely affecting the Mai’adua international market. Residents are appealing to the Federal Government to reopen the borders and reduce checkpoints to restore trade and create job opportunities.
