Katsina Launches Literacy Programme for Disrupted Learners

On Thursday, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda launched the scale-up of the Teaching at the Right Level programme in Katsina, emphasizing the need for children to acquire essential knowledge and skills for their future. The initiative, supported by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, targets foundational literacy and numeracy, particularly for children whose education has been disrupted.

It aims to reach over 3,800 learners through more than 50 learning centres, with over 100 facilitators involved. Radda stated that education should focus on learning outcomes rather than mere enrollment.

Ian Attfield, representing the British High Commission in Nigeria, highlighted the programme's design to assess children based on their actual skills, grouping them by learning levels. The approach is integrated into an Accelerated Basic Education Programme for formerly out-of-school children and includes learner support and inclusive teaching.

A multilingual model is also being piloted in Niger State, utilizing local languages before transitioning to English.
