Kogi PDP Rejects Excessive Campaign Fees Ahead of Elections

The Kogi State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally rejected the campaign signage and promotional material fees announced by the state government in preparation for the October local government elections and the 2027 general elections. The PDP described the fees as excessive and disproportionate, potentially undermining democratic participation.

In a statement by its State Chairman, Hon. Mohammed Sanni Gambo, the party called for a review of the fees and for the government to engage with all political stakeholders. The announced fees include ₦150 million for presidential candidates, ₦50 million for senatorial candidates, ₦30 million for House of Representatives candidates, ₦5 million for State Assembly candidates, ₦2 million for chairmanship candidates, and ₦300,000 for councillorship candidates.

Gambo argued that these fees could create financial barriers for candidates, particularly those operating within statutory campaign spending limits. The PDP also expressed concern over the extension of the policy to personal political expressions, emphasizing the need for reasonable regulations that respect citizens' constitutional rights.
