Kogi Police Chief Warns Youth Against Political Violence, Digital Thuggery

Kogi State Commissioner of Police Naziru Kankarofi has called on young Nigerians to turn away from political violence, digital harassment, false information, and criminal activity. The appeal came during the state police command's observance of International Youth Day 2026 on Saturday, with the event centred on the message that young people's futures are larger than involvement in thuggery.

The commissioner's remarks form part of a broader nationwide push by law enforcement leadership. Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu delivered a similar message at the closing of a national youth leadership and security event in Abuja, where he cautioned young Nigerians that allowing themselves to be used for violence in the present could jeopardise the prosperity and stability they seek to build .

The timing of these appeals coincides with preparation for the 2027 general elections. Both senior police officials stressed that youths occupy a vital role in constructing a secure and peaceful environment, and encouraged them to use their skills and energy constructively rather than as tools for conflict or online harassment.

The Kogi State event operated under the overarching theme 'Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,' recognising that young people across different backgrounds share fundamental desires for stability, safety, and opportunity. The campaign message linked youth aspirations directly to the rejection of political and digital misconduct as obstacles to achieving those goals.
