Kwara Lawmaker Joins Conference on Violence Against Women

Hon. Rukayat Shittu, representing the Owo-Onirin constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly, participated in the West Africa Female Parliamentarian Peer Review Conference held in Accra, Ghana.

This three-day conference, organized by the Women Political Forum (WIPF) with support from UN Women and the European Union, aimed to tackle violence against women and girls (VAWG). The event brought together female parliamentarians, gender ministers, and development partners from the ECOWAS region to review legislative responses to VAWG and strengthen regional collaboration.

During the conference, participants engaged in peer review sessions to examine existing legal frameworks, identify implementation challenges, and exchange best practices. Hon.

Shittu was part of a regional working group that included legislators from Ghana, Senegal, and Uganda, discussing legislative approaches to enhance protections for women and girls. The conference concluded with a call for stronger networks among female parliamentarians to advocate for legislative reforms addressing VAWG across West Africa.
