Kwara PDP Spokesman Jailed for Alleged Defamation of Governor

The spokesman for the Kwara State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) was remanded in prison following his arraignment on two counts of alleged defamation against Governor Adewara. The case was presided over by Justice T.S.

Umar, who refused a bail application made by the spokesman's counsel, stating that the request was not formally moved in line with court procedures. The matter was adjourned until June 10, 2026, for a hearing on the bail application.

Governor Adewara expressed disappointment over the judicial process, highlighting perceived political undertones in the case. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and urged party members to remain calm.

The PDP condemned the remand of its spokesman, accusing the state government of using its machinery to intimidate opposition figures and suppress dissent. The party criticized the government for failing to address insecurity and economic hardships affecting residents, asserting that freedom of expression is central to democratic practice.
