Kwara Senator Saliu Mustapha Defects to PDP from APC

Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections. His decision, formalized in a resignation letter dated August 14, 2026, was influenced by his disagreement with the leadership style of Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Mustapha stated that his defection should not be interpreted as a rejection of President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that it is part of a broader political realignment in Kwara State due to dissatisfaction among APC stakeholders. He mentioned the formation of a "Rainbow Coalition" in the state, which he believes reflects the sentiments of the G-15 group, comprising APC governorship aspirants and party elders who feel alienated by AbdulRazaq's management of the party.

Mustapha has secured the PDP's senatorial ticket for Kwara Central and remains committed to serving the interests of his constituents.
