Lagos Flooding Due to Waste Management Failures

Aina has stated that the recurring flooding in Lagos reflects a collective failure in waste management and drainage infrastructure, exacerbated by human actions. Each rainy season, Lagos streets become inundated, causing loss of assets and lives.

Aina criticized the government's failure to address the underlying issues, including improper waste disposal that clogs drainage systems. The lack of foresight in urban development, particularly in building on wetlands and natural floodplains, has worsened the situation.

Aina emphasized that facility management should extend beyond mere construction to include maintenance and risk prevention. He urged the government agencies, including LASURA, LASBCA, and LASEPA, to enforce regulations and maintain public drainage systems year-round.

Aina called for audits of drainage and pump systems, the implementation of stormwater retention systems, and better waste disposal practices among residents and businesses to mitigate flooding risks.
