Lagos State Reaffirms Ban on Firewood for Cooking

The Lagos State Government has reiterated that the ban on the use of firewood for commercial cooking remains in effect, warning that businesses violating this directive may face sanctions, including the sealing of their premises. Dr Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), made this statement during a workshop for bakery operators aimed at enhancing environmental compliance and promoting healthier food production practices.

Ajayi explained that the ban has been in place for several years and enforcement measures will be implemented in stages, starting with sensitization and escalating to pre-sanction warnings and facility closures for persistent offenders. He highlighted the health risks associated with firewood use and advocated for cleaner energy sources like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and electricity.

The workshop is part of LASEPA's public engagement initiatives to promote environmental sustainability and compliance with regulations, particularly concerning food safety in bakeries.
