Nasarawa State Reaffirms Ban on Tree Felling and Charcoal

The Nasarawa State Government has reiterated that the ban on the felling of trees and the production and sale of charcoal is still in effect across all 13 local government areas. Ede Yakubu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, stated that violators would face strict penalties.

This ban is part of the government's strategy to address climate change, which has led to extreme weather and environmental degradation. Yakubu highlighted that indiscriminate tree felling and charcoal production have significantly contributed to deforestation and environmental harm.

He noted the importance of protecting the environment to prevent further climate-related issues. The ministry is also collaborating with the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes project, supported by the World Bank, to restore degraded lands and rehabilitate forests.

Efforts include replanting trees, as demonstrated during the recent World Environment Day celebration in Nasarawa State.
