Lagos State Restructures Bus Operations with New MoU

On Wednesday, the Lagos State Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to regulate public bus operations under the Lagos State Bus Industry Transition Programme. This agreement aims to integrate the popular yellow buses, known as ‘danfo’, into a modern transport system, improving commuter safety and service delivery.

Mr Olawale Musa, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, described the agreement as a transformative step for public transport in Lagos. The MOU was signed by RTEAN's Lagos State Chairman, Samson Adepeju, and Secretary, Bolaji Kawojue, while NURTW was represented by Chairman Mustapha Adekunle and Secretary Usman Teslim.

The Lagos State Government was represented by Mr Musa and LAMATA Managing Director Mrs Abimbola Akinajo. The new framework will transition commercial bus operations into a franchise-based system across eight designated Quality Bus Corridors, with a focus on digital fare collection and regulatory oversight by LAMATA.
