Lagos Empowers 733 Widows with Support Programs

The Lagos State Government has provided support to 733 widows as part of its initiative to enhance their welfare, protect their rights, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities. This intervention was announced on Wednesday during the 2026 International Widows Day commemoration organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The event, themed “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows,” focused on improving widows' access to justice and economic opportunities. Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada, stated that support for widows should extend beyond financial aid to include access to justice and protection from discrimination.

She highlighted various ministry programs, including skills acquisition, grants, and the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative. Dada urged society to recognize widows' abilities and potential rather than defining them by their loss.

Idayat Baiyewu, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the government's support. The Permanent Secretary, Rianat Onigbanjo, reiterated the need for opportunities that protect widows' rights.
