Lagos State Launches Biogas Production Initiative

The Lagos State Government has inaugurated a technical committee to drive the commercialization of biogas and biomethane production across the state. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transport, confirmed the committee's establishment during a press briefing.
The initiative aims to reduce dependence on imported fuel and accelerate the transition to cleaner energy solutions. Feasibility studies indicate that biogas and biomethane can serve as viable alternatives to conventional diesel, with Lagos generating approximately 13,000 metric tons of waste daily, 45% of which is organic.
The committee's goal is to facilitate the full commercialization of biogas production. This initiative is part of a broader clean energy and sustainable transport agenda, which includes the introduction of 2,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) powered trucks and the deployment of electric buses.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration has made significant strides in promoting cleaner transport systems, including the replacement of diesel-powered buses and the establishment of an electric rail network.
