Lagos State Reaffirms Commitment to Press Freedom

On World Press Freedom Day 2026, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the government's commitment to press freedom and the protection of journalists. In a message delivered by Commissioner for Information Gbenga Omotoso, Sanwo-Olu stated that the media plays a crucial role in shaping public discourse and advancing democracy.

He highlighted the need for journalists to uphold their profession, especially during periods of policy reform and socio-economic changes in Nigeria. The governor raised concerns about emerging threats to the information ecosystem, including misinformation and the safety risks faced by journalists.

He called for stronger collaboration among government, media practitioners, and civil society to safeguard the integrity of the information ecosystem, particularly as the nation approaches electoral cycles. Sanwo-Olu reiterated the administration's commitment to supporting initiatives that promote press freedom and media literacy, reinforcing that a free press is essential for peace, security, and inclusive development.
