Gbaye Florence of LASBCA Urges Defined Roles in Construction

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), under the leadership of General Manager Gbaye Florence, issued a warning to building professionals regarding the dangers of taking on roles outside their areas of expertise. This warning was delivered on Thursday at a conference organized by the Building Collapse Prevention Guild, Amuwo-Odofin Cell, in Satellite Town, Lagos.

The conference, themed “Building Resilient Lagos through Synergy,” was prompted by the collapse of a four-storey building on Ladipo Street in June, which resulted in multiple fatalities. Gbaye Florence emphasized that a safer construction environment cannot be achieved if professionals neglect their defined responsibilities.

She urged collaboration among architects, structural engineers, and other specialists to ensure safety in construction. Additionally, she called on community leaders and stakeholders to report distressed buildings to the government.

Conference coordinator Chibuike Okafor highlighted the necessity for community involvement in building safety, while chairman Austin Otuoke stressed the importance of collective responsibility in preventing future collapses.
