Lawmakers Demand Accountability for Osun Election Violence

Concerned members of the House of Representatives, under the Save Democracy Group, addressed the violence and loss of lives during the Osun State governorship election held on Saturday. They called for an investigation into a video where Senator Francis Fadahunsi allegedly encouraged violence against members of the Accord Party in Ilesa.

Despite Fadahunsi's denial of inciting violence, the group insisted on an independent investigation. They highlighted the loss of lives as unacceptable in political competition and commended Osun State residents for exercising their democratic rights amid intimidation.

The Nigeria Police Force had previously confirmed investigations into 30 politically motivated killings linked to the election, with civil society documenting 56 violent incidents and 14 fatalities. The group criticized the effectiveness of security personnel deployment, urging comprehensive investigations into all political violence cases and accountability for perpetrators, regardless of political affiliation.
