Lawmakers Demand Probe into Osun Election Violence

The Save Democracy Group, a bipartisan platform of members of the House of Representatives in the 10th National Assembly, expressed serious concerns regarding the violence and fatalities surrounding the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election. In a press release issued in Abuja on Monday, the group condemned the loss of lives as an unacceptable cost of political competition.

The release, signed by Rt Hon Awaji-Inombek Dagomie Abiante, Rt. Hon Abubakar Yahaya Kusada, and Hon Mansur Musa Jega, highlighted that the Nigeria Police Force was investigating 30 cases of suspected politically motivated killings linked to the election, with civil society documenting 56 violent incidents and 14 fatalities.

The group criticized the effectiveness of security personnel deployment, calling for investigations into all deaths and the alleged incitement by Senator Francis Fadahunsi, who denied encouraging violence but acknowledged the need for an independent inquiry. They urged the Inspector-General of Police and other authorities to ensure accountability for political violence.
