Fire Breaks Out at Senate Hearing Room 107

A fire incident occurred in Senate hearing room 107 shortly after Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, a member representing the North East on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Smoke suddenly filled the room, causing confusion among senators and guests, who scrambled to exit. A viral video captured staff members attributing the fire to a microwave left unattended in the kitchen area attached to the hearing room.

Efforts to contain the blaze were reportedly hampered by inadequate water supply, with voices heard in the background expressing concern that there was not enough water to extinguish the flames. Security personnel and staff battled to prevent the fire from spreading further, and the situation was eventually brought under control with the intervention of Senator Ekpenyong and Senator Salihu Mustapha, along with parliamentary staff.

The extent of the damage and the exact cause of the fire have not been officially confirmed, as Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu could not be reached for comment at the time of the report.
