Lawyer Supports Mother Over Controversial Nursery Textbook

Human rights lawyer Inibeh Effiong has come forward to support Maryqueen Udoka, a mother who expressed concerns regarding a nursery school textbook that allegedly contains inappropriate content for young children. Udoka's complaints led to allegations of intimidation against her, prompting her to seek public support.

Effiong filed a petition with the police at Zone 2 Command Onikan, Lagos, requesting the author of the controversial textbook to explain its content. The petition claims the book contains passages that could be seen as conspiratorial, defamatory, and offensive.

The Lagos State government indicated that the book had not been approved for use in schools. The police invited both Effiong and Udoka for discussions, which lasted three hours.

The matter has been adjourned until May 7, 2026, for further proceedings. The controversy escalated after a viral video highlighted the textbook's violent content, raising significant public concern and drawing comments from figures like Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan.
