Labour Party in Edo State Remains Strong Amid Defections

The Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has dismissed claims of its collapse following recent defections, asserting that the party remains strong and intact. Chairman Comrade Kelli Ogbaloi made this declaration on Friday in Benin City, responding to suggestions that the LP was becoming inactive due to political motivations behind the defections.

Ogbaloi emphasized that the country's legal framework allows politicians to change parties and that such movements do not weaken the foundational structure of the LP. He acknowledged recent internal disputes but described them as part of the democratic evolution, noting that no political party is immune to internal disagreements.

Furthermore, a recent high court judgment has clarified leadership questions at the national level, affirming the appointment of a new national chairman and stabilizing the party's structural leadership amid ongoing tussles. The court held that the contest for leadership lacked constitutional backing due to not meeting quorum requirements stipulated in the party's constitution.
