Man Arrested for Shouting During Governor's Visit in Suleja

Hamisu Abdullahi, 38, was arrested in Suleja, Niger State, on March 20, 2026, for allegedly shouting the phrase "no water, no light" during Governor Bago's visit for Sallah celebrations. The police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, stating that Abdullahi was attempting to disrupt government activities.

Following his arrest, he was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna and spent five days in detention before being granted bail. His brother, Haruna Abdullahi, confirmed his release on Tuesday.

The arrest reportedly occurred under orders from the governor, although this claim has not been independently verified. Bologi Ibrahim, the chief press secretary to the governor, was not aware of the incident when contacted.

Meanwhile, the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria issued a statement urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to caution Governor Bago against actions that could impede press freedom, emphasizing the need to respect journalists' rights.
