Armed Attacks in Benue Communities Leave Many Dead

In the early hours of Sunday, armed invaders attacked at least six villages in the Mbaterem council ward of Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The attack occurred around 4:30 AM, with witnesses reporting that the assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately.

Local residents fled into the bushes for safety, and the Chairman of Ukum LGA, Jonathan Modi, confirmed that security operatives responded promptly to the situation, evacuating both the deceased and the injured to hospitals. The Benue Police Command, represented by Police Public Relations Officer Peter Aondongu, confirmed the attack and stated that further details were being gathered.

Governor Hyacinth Alia expressed his condolences to the victims' families and commended the security agencies for their quick response. He attributed the violence to armed herders and urged residents to remain vigilant.

Alia reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the people of Benue and maintaining security in the state.
