FAA Equipment Outage Causes Major Flight Disruptions

On Monday, significant disruptions occurred in U.S. air travel as equipment outages halted flights at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and Philadelphia International Airport in Pennsylvania. More than 900 flights were canceled nationwide, and over 5,000 were delayed, with Newark and Philadelphia being the most affected.

The issues originated from a circuit failure at a Philadelphia air traffic control facility, as stated by FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. When the backup system was activated, it was discovered that the backup line in New Jersey had been cut.

To address the circuit issue in Philadelphia, airspace in the Northeast was temporarily closed for at least 30 minutes, leading to expanded ground stops at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.

Although airspace reopened at JFK and LaGuardia, operations remained halted at Philadelphia and Newark airports due to unsuccessful repairs, with no estimated time for resumption. United Airlines, which operates a hub at Newark, announced the cancellation of all remaining domestic flights for the day.
