Labour Calls for Minimum Wage Review in Abia State

On May Day, Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya, the chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Abia State, called on Governor Alex Otti to review the minimum wage for workers in the state to help mitigate the economic hardships they face. Speaking in Umuahia during the 2026 Workers' Day celebration, Ogbonnaya highlighted the theme of insecurity and poverty as significant barriers to decent work.

He commended Otti for being among the first governors to approve the implementation of the 2024 minimum wage but noted that inflation has significantly eroded workers' purchasing power. Ogbonnaya pointed out that the current minimum wage is nearly meaningless due to rampant inflation, which has made basic necessities increasingly unaffordable.

In response, Governor Otti promised to consider the request from the labor organization, emphasizing his administration's commitment to improving workers' welfare and career growth while encouraging union members to prioritize collective interests over personal gains.
