MDCAN Demands Action After EFCC Assault on UUTH Doctor

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has condemned the assault on Professor Eyo Ekp, a member of the Department of Chemical Pathology at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), by personnel from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The incident, described as a brutal and unlawful detention, occurred within the hospital premises, which MDCAN asserts should be a safe space for healthcare workers.

Dr. Taiwo Alatish, the association's public secretary, characterized the assault as a dehumanizing display of power.

MDCAN's leadership, represented by Professor Apollo Chidi Ndukuba, expressed profound indignation and grave concern over the incident, calling for immediate investigation and prosecution of the EFCC operatives involved. The association warned that it would no longer tolerate harassment and intimidation of its members by law enforcement agencies.

Additionally, the Akwa Ibom branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) declared an indefinite total strike in response to the assault.
