Violence Erupts in Mexico After El Mencho's Death

The death of 59-year-old Nemesio El Mencho Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during a military operation in Jalisco has triggered widespread violence across Mexico. El Mencho was killed on a Sunday during a fierce gun battle as troops attempted to capture cartel members.

The US State Department had previously offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture, accusing him of trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, and orchestrating violent reprisals against security forces and public officials. Following his death, suspected cartel members barricaded roads and set vehicles ablaze, leading to clashes with authorities.

Videos circulated on social media showing heavy fighting in Tapalpa and panic at airports as passengers feared retaliatory attacks. In response to the unrest, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged citizens to remain calm while security forces sought to restore order, and airlines canceled numerous flights amid heightened security concerns.
