Nigeria and EU Advance Readmission Agreement Talks

Nigeria and the European Union have renewed efforts to finalize the EU-Nigeria Readmission Agreement, which has been pending since its initiation in 2016. This was a key topic during discussions between Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Brunner emphasized the importance of concluding the agreement, stating it would facilitate broader cooperation on migration issues. Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed Nigeria's interest in ensuring that migration cooperation includes reintegration support for returnees and expanded legal pathways for Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad.

The EU delegation indicated that Nigeria's concerns had been incorporated into a proposed framework for broader Migration and Security Cooperation. This framework aims to address local talent partnerships, mobility, reintegration of returnees, and border management, while also exploring information exchange arrangements with Europol to combat transnational organized crime.
