Nigerian Military Engages Veterans to Resolve Conflicts

The Nigerian military has initiated a program to formally engage retired personnel in addressing the increasing violent conflicts across the country. Chief of Defence Staff Gen.

Olufemi Oluyede disclosed this initiative during the flag-off of a media conflict resolution skill training for veterans in Abuja on Monday. The training, organized in collaboration with the Media Training Institute, aims to equip retired military personnel with modern skills in mediation and conflict resolution.

This initiative reflects a strategic shift towards strengthening non-kinetic approaches to tackle Nigeria's evolving security challenges, which are increasingly driven by local disputes and community tensions. Gen.

Oluyede emphasized that military operations alone cannot guarantee lasting peace, highlighting the importance of early intervention and dialogue. The program is supported by veteran associations, including Isaac Oguntuyi's coalition, which encourages veterans to contribute to national stability and peacebuilding efforts.

The training is expected to enhance grassroots mediation capacity and strengthen national efforts to reduce violent conflict through non-kinetic means.
