Veterans Seek 'Certificate of Return' for Reintegration

Military veterans in Nigeria, represented by the Remenaf organization, are urging state governors to implement a formal reintegration framework for ex-servicemen through the introduction of a "certificate of return." This appeal was made in an open letter addressed to the chairman of the Nigeria Governor Forum, Okhidievbi Oamien, during a recent address in Abuja. The veterans argue that while they proudly served their states, they often return home without formal recognition, feeling like strangers in their own communities.

The proposed measures include collaboration with the military pension board and the Ministry of Defence to develop a comprehensive database of veterans. They also suggest organizing state ceremonies to publicly acknowledge and welcome veterans back into society.

The initiative aims not only to restore dignity and recognition for former military personnel but also to enhance state security by utilizing their discipline and training in local security structures. Remenaf emphasizes that this recognition could boost morale among current service members and encourage respect for military service among young Nigerians.
