Court Reinstates 455 Retired Police Officers in Nigeria

The Court of Appeal in Abuja recently upheld a ruling by the National Industrial Court, reinstating 455 retired police officers who were unjustly dismissed. The judgment, delivered on September 30, 2025, by Justice R.B.

Haastrup, ordered immediate reinstatement and payment of salaries to the affected officers. This decision followed an appeal by the Police Service Commission (PSC) against the earlier ruling, which described the dismissals as illegal.

The appeal was dismissed by a three-member panel, including Justices Okorowo, Banjoko, and Okon Abang. The ruling has sparked controversy within Nigeria's police force, with critics alleging that the dismissals lacked legal justification.

Among the retired officers are notable figures such as AIG Idowu Owohunwa and AIG Ben Igw. The case reflects ongoing issues of impunity and unjust retirements within Nigeria's security agencies, reminiscent of past military administrations.

The PSC has indicated plans to file a separate appeal regarding the matter.
