MURIC Demands Defence Minister Musa Resign Over Security Failures

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) issued a statement on Saturday, August 22, 2026, demanding Nigeria's Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa, either demonstrate significant improvements in security or resign from his position within a fortnight. The ultimatum was signed by Prof. Ishaq Akintola, the executive director of MURIC.

The group criticized Musa for failing to fulfill his commitment to end killings across Nigeria, noting that at least 43 people and an Imam were killed, while 19 others were kidnapped in recent weeks, framing these attacks as assaults on Islam. MURIC held Musa directly responsible for security failures in Sokoto and called for an "iron-clad defence mechanism" in the area.

The group referenced a warning from the Department of State Services (DSS) about potential terrorist attacks on tertiary institutions in Sokoto as a catalyst for their demands. MURIC set August 24, 2026, as the start date for a 14-day countdown for Musa to implement visible changes to security in Sokoto.
